In the Name of Allaah the most Gracious, and the most Merciful

Alhamdulillahi rabbil aalameen  wassalathu wassalamu ala Muhammadin wa ala ali wa ashaaabihee ajmaeen amma ba'd,

Assalamu Alaikum Warahmathullahi Wabrakathuhu,

May this mail find you in the best of health and Eemaan.
Maasha Allaah, the brother has given some credit to his teacher Dr. (Academic) Shukri who has given him some academic (worldly) guidance which has benefited him.

But we are concerned about the overly praising of his contribution to Islam, wallaahi ( I swear By Allaah),  that it is important to protect the honor of a Person, but, what  is more  important and  more dearer is to protect Allaah's right, Allaah's Religion  and the honour  of Islam, than one individuals name and fame. Therefore, realizing the truth and the history of an individual will make the Muslim Ummah understand who such an individual is, with regard to the religion of Allaah.

E.g. people came from South India and Kerala , who spread the Kattam , fatihaa, kandury, Manzil , making amulet and so on, who had a high status among the people during that time, but now with the  realization of the truth, the general mass know, who they were.

As for the   mere exaggeration by the Author (Seyed Alavi Sheriffdeen) , and  the words  used to overly praise a human being is surprising. Therefore, It is incumbent upon us to show the real picture, and place him, where he is supposed to be placed in the history of Sri Lankan Muslim.

what has been said is, in the name of  Felicitation, they keep a person on stage and praise him , so that  the actual praise  and bounty  of  Allaah will be taken out of  the chest,  so that they kill  his  Eemaan and develop  showiness (shirk ar-Riya'), or he might be continuously involved in his innovation (Bid'ah) if it was praised by the people.

These Felicitation and wrapping silk clothes over person's shoulder are custom and practice of the Kuffar , due to our living  and excess mingling with the disbelievers  , we too may tend to do these things thinking it is a part of our Religion.

Most of the celebrations contained excessive praise, exaggeration and excessiveness in glorifying.

That is why the prophet sallallahu alaihi wasallam, prohibited us from that in his saying do not exaggerate in praising me as the Christians exaggerated in praising the son of Mary (Eesaa) for verily I'm only a slave, so say the slave of Allaah and his messenger (al- Bukhari)

This mail is written with the obedience to Allaah's word  and the Sunnah of the Prophet

Let there arise out of you a group of people inviting to all that is good (Islam), enjoining Al-Ma`ruf (all that Islam orders) and forbidding Al-Munkar (all that Islam has forbidden). And it is they who are the successful.(3:104)

The objective of this Ayah is that there should be a segment of this Muslim Ummah fulfilling this task, even though it is also an obligation on every member of this Ummah, each according to his ability. Muslim recorded that Abu Hurayrah said that the Messenger of Allah said,

«مَنْ رَأَى مِنْكُمْ مُنْكَرًا فَلْيُغَيِّرْهُ بِيَدِهِ، فَإِنْ لَمْ يَسْتَطِعْ فَبِلِسَانِهِ، فَإِنْ لَمْ يَسْتَطِع فَبِقَلْبِهِ،

وَذلِكَ أَضْعَفُ الْإِيمَان»

(Whoever among you witnesses an evil let him change it with his hand. If he is unable, then let him change it with his tongue. If he is unable, then let him change it with his heart, and this is the weakest faith.).

As for the Praise by the Author of the article (Seyed Alavi Sheriffdeen) that  he studied  Islam  from Prof. William Montgomery Watt (Emeritus Professor in Arabic and Islamic Studies at the University of Edinburgh), He was awarded a Commonwealth scholarship to pursue his Ph.D in Islamic Studies at the University of Edinburgh, UK (1976). Which is strange, How can you claim that he studied Islam from the Kuffar, How can you claim the University of Edinburgh, UK,(Christian) can Teach Islam, When Allaah said  about the Christians and the Jews, in the Qur'an, quite contrary to what you say.

O  you  who believe! Take not as (your) Bitanah (advisors, helpers) those other than your own, since they will not fail to do their best to corrupt you. They desire to harm you severely. Hatred has already appeared from their mouths, but what their breasts conceal is far worse. Indeed We have made plain to you the Ayat if you understand. 3-118

Therefore, Allah forbids His believing servants from taking the hypocrites as advisors, so that the hypocrites do not have the opportunity to expose the secrets of the believers and their plans against their enemies. The hypocrites try their very best to confuse, oppose and harm the believers any way they can, and by using any wicked, evil means at their disposal. They wish the very worst and difficult conditions for the believers. This is why Allah said, they desire to harm you severely. Hatred and enmity appears on their faces and in what they sometimes utter, as well as, the enmity they have against Islam and its people in their hearts. Since this fact is apparent to every person who has sound comprehension.

Al-Bukhari and An-Nasa'i recorded that, Abu Sa`id said that the Messenger of Allah said,

Ibn Abi Hatim reported that Ibn Abi Ad-Dahqanah said, "`Umar bin Al-Khattab was told, `There is young man here from the people of Hirah (in Iraq, who were Christians) who is a proficient scribe. Why do you not appoint him as a scribe' `Umar said, `I would then be taking advisors from among the disbelievers.''' This Ayah and the story about `Umar testify to the fact that Muslims are not allowed to use Ahl Adh-Dhimmah to be scribes in matters that affect the affairs of Muslims and expose their secrets, for they might convey these secrets to combatant disbelievers. This is why Allah said, they desire to harm you severely.)

Dear brothers, if this was the ruling for scribe writer for Umar Rallalalahu Anhu , what is the ruling of person  who claimed to have studied Islam from a kaafir. As you know, all the major deviant sects started, after people started studying Islam from non Muslims.  The Shi'a Founder is Abdullah Ibn Sabaah, he was a Yemeni Jew. (Who took his Aqeeda from the Jews) Qaderiyah-   Started by Ma'bath Al Juhaine, he got the Aqeeda   from the Christians (Zansavi or Suzan ) JahmiyyahJaham bin shafawan (D 126) is a Student of Jahth ibnu dirham and he is a Student of At- Thalooth and his Teacher, is   Labith ibnul Asam, who is a Jew who did magic upon Prophet Sallallahu alaihiwasslam.

The Christians would have felt victorious after reading this article in the Sunday Times about getting to teach the Muslims their religion (Islam) and about having an agent to execute their own way of Islam in Sri Lanka

All these show, the serious need of taking Islamic education from the true scholars of Ahlu Sunnah wal Jammah, who practice every part of the sunnah.

Now let me tell you, what has been promoted and taught in these so called Naleemiyah, it is  a mix of All. Starting from sufism  of  Abu haamid Al- Gazzaali  to western Orientalsit  Islam to Jamathai Islami  in the name of Islam, which is worth nothing to none.

Imam Dhabi Said " Ihya ulum mudh deen - Awakening of Deen " NO, its " imatadut deen - Death to deen "  (siar ahlamul nubla),

Shaykh al-Islam [Ibn Taymiyah] was asked about this book, and he replied as follows: this books contains, Sufism, Bid'a (innovation), Daeef (weak), mawdoo' (fabricated) ahaadeeth, Philosophy on Tawheed and many unacceptable things .

That is why you see, these Naleemi are western orientalists   in the name of Islam,  they are more on   to BA and  MA  and using  Islam and qualifications to take Positions, not to serve the dawah of Allaah and Practice in the day to  day Life. Hardly you see, these graduates practicing the sunnah of Prophet including Dr. (Academic)  Shukri ,  his imitations of western appearance.

http://www.sundaytimes.lk/080622/Plus/timesplus0022.html

Whereas the Messenger Sallallahu alaihiwasallam said: " whoever imitates a people then he is from them" (Sahih Abu dawood)

You can see his basic appearance never portray a genuine Muslim, leave alone scholarly. His  trimmed Beard , Trailing  trousers  below the ankle and  imitating  the yahudi in dress code,  coat and   trousers  which exposes the protruded buttocks and  the Awrah, see the hair Style, prophet ordered to comb parted in the middle, how he has combed is the prohibited; Christian and Jewish way. Please refer the evil of wearing western trousers and imitation of Kuffar in dress code, by Naasirud - deen al –Albaanee. http://www.sunnahpublishing.net/modules/Fiqh/albaaneepants.pdf

We have also seen from the so many Pseudo Salafis , they  claim to be that they  are  Ahlu sunnah wal Jammah and are in the path of Salaf Salih, but when it comes to dress code and appearance it is the path of  the Christians and the Jews they choose. You would have seen most of them let their wives wear Abaaya or Jilbab  with true sunnah appearance of an Arab women , when it  comes husband ,  sadly  he is like a true westerner , unless he himself tells that he is  a Muslim, no body knows from outward appearance that he is a Muslim. This is the hypocrisy of men, when it comes practicing Sunnah.

That is why we are amazed. When they themselves are not practicing   the basic outward appearance of Sunnah , what is the point in having  knowledge whilst you are the first person to disobey the knowledge .Isn't  it like a donkey carrying loads of books on its back.

Coming Back Dr. (Academic) Shukri, as we know in our early days we have studied our O/L Islam Book which helped most of us to get Distinction in Islam. but now most of Us will agree , that it was one of the worst books we have ever studied in our life, when it comes to the basic belief of Allaah, and also  one  of the main person  and  brain  child behind this book is  Dr.(Academic)  Shukri

It contains complete sufism  material especially in the belief of Allaah,  saying (Allaah thuseelum irruppaann , thoonilum irruppaann) Allaah is in the dust, pillar, earth and every where.  That is the aqeedah of  wahadathul wujood( the belief that everything in existence is intact with Allah – this deviant belief is held by many soofees) , which is clear shirk  by consensus  of scholars.

And that  Islam Book Murders  Allaah's  names and Attributes , saying  Allaah has no Hand, leg, eyes and Face etc, while  Allaah confirms  these  attributes available to him  but unique to him alone, befitting his majesty.

All these big blunders and misguidance are spread by non other than this Dr. Shukri. He has been spreading these misguidance through these Islam Books for studies, Radio program, etc etc.

These shirks were spread through that Book, but lately I found that they have removed  the above portion , but still hide the True Aqeedah of Ahlu Sunnah wal Jammah. Without teaching the condition of laa ilaaha illallaah Muhammad – ur -rasoolullaah, the types of Tawheed, types of Shirk and Types of Niffaq, bid'a and so on so that the young ones are left wandering without the true Aqeeda even after getting a distinction for Islam in O/L.

But we know after studying Islam,

الرَّحْمَـنُ عَلَى الْعَرْشِ اسْتَوَى

[020:005] The Most Gracious (Allâh) rose over (Istawâ) the (Mighty) Throne (in a manner that suits His Majesty).

This Allaah confirms his existence in  7 places in the  Quraan  (7;54),10:3),(13:2) (20:5)(25:59),(32:4),57:4).

He is not mixed with creation and separated from creation.

These are based on what I have observed in his present writing and speech. Therefore, I may be wrong, if he has repented from the influence of Sufism and western orientalisaam. If that is the case then please explain to us the current status of  Aqeeda and Manhaj upon which he is clinging onto , so that Allaah will reward him for what he is upon.

whatever I  said, if it is truth it is from Allaah, and   if there are false it is  from me and whispering  sha'ytan.May Allah guide all of us to the straight path and show us the truth as truth and give the might to follow it, and show us the false as false and give the might to avoid it. Ameen.

Jazakallahu Khair

Allaah Knows Best

Akram Abdus Samad

A salute from afar
Tribute to Dr. M.A.M. Shukri

By Seyed Alavi Sheriffdeen, Naleemi, BA, M.Ed(Deakin)

It gives me great pleasure to pen these lines for my teacher and mentor Dr. Mohamed Ali Mohamed Shukri (known as "Dr Shukri" in Sri Lanka). The long relationship I have had with this intellectual for over two decades inspires me to salute him as a loyal student and friend.

A ceremony to felicitate Dr. Shukri was held at the BMICH on June 21

I met him first at Naleemiah Institute. I was a new student from a village and my admiration of Dr. Shukri was sparked from the first speech he delivered welcoming us to the institute. His outstanding intellectual capacity, melodious tone and eloquent lectures would attract anyone. Then in our mid-teens, we were very eager to listen to his speeches at morning gatherings at the institute.

Dr. Shukri would take us through an enjoyable academic journey which would touch the golden ages of those leading institutions with which he was associated. During class discussions, he would forget his supreme position of director, his authority, and the traditional gap prevailing in developing countries between students and teachers and mingle closely with us.

In those days when we didn't know about the academic world, he would talk about top academic journals, authors, thinkers and modern thoughts. The glimpses I had through his presentations in our classroom discussions greatly assisted me when later I pursued my graduate studies in Sri Lanka and postgraduate studies at Deakin University, Melbourne University and Victoria University in Australia.
Dr. Shukri's charisma and deep analysis with his presentations would touch us all. He is an erudite scholar, humble human being and inspiring mentor.

He was born in 1940 in Matara, Sri Lanka. He studied at St. Thomas College, Al Hamra College and Zahira College. He was fortunate to be guided by great people like A.M.A. Azeez of Zahira College, Prof. Imam of Peradeniya University, Prof. William Montgomery Watt (Emeritus Professor in Arabic and Islamic Studies at the University of Edinburgh) and Prof. Kailasapathy (University of Peradeniya).
He entered the University of Peradeniya and passed out with First Class (Honours) in 1965. He was awarded a Commonwealth scholarship to pursue his Ph.D in Islamic Studies at the University of Edinburgh, UK (1976). Unlike many others, Dr. Shukri chose to return to his motherland rather than living a comfortable living in the West.

He functioned as head of the Department of Arabic & Islamic Studies at the Universities of Kelaniya and Peradeniya. When Naleemiah was in need of a person who could drive it to an international level, Haj Naleem identified Dr. Shukri as a person who would be ideal for the task. He took over Naleemiah's directorship in 1981, the year I entered Naleemiah. His appointment led Naleemiah along a steady path which many Islamic institutions missed out on, in Sri Lanka. The appointment of a person educated in the West has given a different paradigm to this religious institution.

Dr. Shukri worked very closely with Naleem Hajiar and guided Haj Naleem in many community welfare projects such as the Islamic Renaissance Movement or Iqra Technical Institute from which many poor students benefited for their higher studies.

One of the outcomes of their association was the international conference held in Naleemiah on the history of Muslims of Sri Lanka. A book on this conference was launched at the BMICH where former president J. R. Jayaewardene and Colvin R. de Silva were guests. Dr. Shukri has also authored about 15 books and contributed several research papers to learned journals and international conferences.

His contribution to the academic world especially to Sri Lanka should be appreciated by all. He has left a legacy of academic achievement in the education of Muslims and others that must be taken as a model by younger generations.

I wish him every success and a long healthy life to serve this country at this time of turbulence.

The writer is a lecturer at Higher Colleges of Technology in United Arab Emirates
